Ask the Experts: Engineering Tech Enhances Project Design in NH
What are some of the most interesting engineering projects happening in New Hampshire this year?
We are seeing many redevelopment and expansion projects throughout the State for the coming year. The inventory of previously undeveloped land, especially in Southern New Hampshire, continues to shrink, so many of our larger projects for 2023 are on redevelopment sites where previous buildings will either be removed, renovated, or expanded to create something new. Redevelopment and expansion projects are particularly interesting because it is necessary to incorporate the existing site conditions and utility connections into the design.
Are you seeing a change in project design as companies downsize, streamline, or expand their capabilities?
Our project design processes are constantly adapting and changing based on the AutoCAD software that we use and the requirements of our clients. Since the COVID pandemic, working remotely outside of the office has become the norm for our company and in the broader construction industry, so we have expanded our utilization of different online file-sharing and collaboration tools to make working remotely more efficient and most importantly more accurate.
What are the latest state-of-the-art design trends that you’re seeing?
The increasing use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the most state-of-the-art design trend that we are seeing. With high construction costs and supply chain delays, we are seeing more clients utilize BIM to virtually see the future construction of their projects. Our primary design software, AutoCAD, can merge the designs for different aspects of a project, such as the underground utility connections with the architect’s building design model. The project team can virtually see a 3D model of the future project and determine if any conflicts will arise during construction.
How much emphasis do you see on incorporating energy efficiency and sustainability in upcoming projects?
We see a very large emphasis on incorporating energy efficiency and sustainability in just about all of our projects. Firstly, over the last 10 years, the international building codes have been updated to include many energy efficiency requirements and standards that were previously thought to be “above and beyond. Also, with energy costs at historically high rates, our Clients are asking us to look into every possible option during the design process to increase efficiency and sustainability in an effort to reduce construction and future maintenance costs.
What are some of the best things a construction firm can do to achieve a healthy bottom line in 2023?
There is a lot of uncertainty in the economic outlook for 2023, but the industry has remained resilient and I don’t foresee any change going into the Spring construction season. As a professional service firm, I think the best thing to maintain a healthy bottom line in 2023 is to continue to focus on providing value and practical solutions to clients.

Engineers Week is here! The New Hampshire Union Leader has presented a special edition this week to promote ‘STEM’ professions and to celebrate Engineers for all that they do. This special section includes a recent TFMoran project, the NH SportsDome on the front page! TFMoran Principal, Nick Golon spoke of the trials and tribulations that came with this first-of-its-kind structure in New Hampshire:
“Given its magnitude, siting the structure to minimize sightlines from adjacent properties, while maintaining required setbacks, and providing the necessary utility infrastructure were challenging issues. Another significant element was snow removal, to make sure that snowfall would not pose any risk of damage to the structure. Site grading and drainage were carefully designed so that snow and snowmelt could be conveyed safely and efficiently away from the structure and surrounding parking through an open drainage system of swales and infiltration basins.”
In other exciting TFMoran news, the announcement of our new Principals was also featured!
February 16-22, 2020 was National Engineers Week and TFMoran had a lot to Celebrate! TFMoran’s Bedford and Portsmouth offices took a late break on Friday afternoon for a “T.G.I.F” celebration of the week and recent engineering awards and staff news. The Bedford staff enjoyed an assortment of food from Puritan Backroom such as chicken tenders, stuffed shells, meatballs and cheese sticks, while the Portsmouth office was treated to pulled-pork sandwiches.
Besides celebrating our profession, we celebrated our staff who either recently won awards, were promoted or passed their PE exams. The big news was, our very own Jeremy Belanger who was selected by a jury of his peers from New Hampshire’s Joint Engineering Societies as the 2020 Young Engineer of the Year! Nick Golon was another TFMer to celebrate, he was recently in the Union Leader for being recognized as one of the state’s standout young professionals in the 2020 Class of “40 Under Forty”. TFM’s Jen Porter and Tom Burns were celebrated as they both were promoted to Senior level. And, more exciting news to celebrate was that Natasha Kultchitsky and Jeremy Belanger recently passed the NH Professional Engineering exam. Congratulations to all for your accomplishments! We are proud to have you on the TFMoran team.
Last, but by no means least, we celebrated that TFMoran was recently voted 2020 Best of Business in the Engineering category by New Hampshire Business Review readers for the 8th straight year! We will be celebrating at BOB Award Party hosted by NHBR on March 12th at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord.
Did you know? Engineers Week was first started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers to call attention to the contributions to society that engineers make. It was intentionally planned to include George Washington’s birthday of February 22, as he is considered the first engineer- as a surveyor!
The New Hampshire Union Leader is one of several local newspapers dedicating a special section to Engineers Week. This week is promoted annually by DiscoverE, an ASCE partner, to promote the profession and celebrate engineers by showing the world the important work engineers contribute to our every day lives. Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 16th starts off the week, and the Union Leader is showcasing various types of New Hampshire civil engineering projects and engineering news from all around the state. The front page of this special section announces that TFMoran’s Jeremy Belanger was named 2020 Young Engineer of the Year. TFMoran is very proud to have Jeremy on our team and we congratulate him for all of his hard work, dedication and accomplishments. Jeremy was recently promoted to a Senior Engineer and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of New Hampshire.
Congratulations also to Bob Henry, who was named Engineer of the Year. According to the Union Leader article, Bob had a 40-year career at the University of New Hampshire mentoring more than a thousand students.
As we celebrate Engineers Week we thank our incredible team of over 30 engineers for all of their hard work, dedication and the incredible tasks they accomplish.
