A Dream Come True for a TFMoran Surveyor’s Son

Congratulations to Richard Ward, Jr., who entered and won the 2016 Congressional Art Competition for New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, for his graphite drawing of a young woman, entitled “Inspiring Opportunities”. Richard lives in Boscawen, New Hampshire and attends Merrimack Valley High School, class of 2017.  His proud father, one of TFMoran’s Survey Field Technicians, Richard Ward, Sr., shared this great news with TFMoran. Richard’s dream come true is to travel to Washington, DC this summer to attend the artist’s reception at the White House, and see his award-winning artwork hung in the U.S. Capitol. Richard created an “Inspiring Opportunities Fund” to raise money for his travel expenses to and from DC;  for art materials, and to participate in the NH Institute of Art Summer Program. TFMoran is a long-time supporter of the arts, and proudly contributed to help make Richard’s dream a reality. 

As explained on the website of the competition host, Congresswoman Ann McLane Kuster, “Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent across the nation and right here in New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District.  The Congressional Art Competition was established in 1982, in order to encourage Members of Congress to recognize the artistic accomplishments of young community members in their districts. Since then, hundreds of thousands of students have participated in competitions all across the country.”

As a result of the Congressional Award, Richard was awarded a merit scholarship to Kimball Jenkins School of Art  and a $1,000 scholarship towards the New Hampshire Institute of Art Intensive Summer Program. Other achievements include Merrimack Valley High School Academic Excellence Certificate for earning a 3.5 GPA or higher; a Medallion recognizing excellence in fine arts; and the Merrimack Valley Excellence in Fine Arts plaque; a Gold Key Award and Honorable Mention Award from Scholastic.

TFMoran President and Chief Engineer, Robert Duval, PE was one of the speakers at this year’s State of the Northern New England Market Summit, hosted by New England Real Estate Journal. The Summit was held on June 7, 2016 at the Portsmouth Harbor Events & Conference Center from 8 a.m. to noon. Mr. Duval spoke during the first session covering “Real Estate Updates/Trends, Industrial, Office, Multi-family and Retail”. The following three sessions covered “Construction Projects”, “Capital Investments” and “Market Overview Opportunities and Future Vacancy Rate, Inventory, Cap Rates, Outside Influences in the Market”.

TFMoran was one of the Corporate Sponsors and had a booth at the Summit featuring a variety of recent projects. TFMoran’s MSC Division Manager and Principal, Corey Colwell, LLS attended the Summit and was on hand to discuss seacoast area projects.

TFMoran has been named Business NH Magazine 2016 Business of the Year in the Construction/Engineering/Real Estate category. The award recognizes businesses for outstanding civic contributions and exceptional performance.

Since 1968, the team at TFM has been leading northern New England with innovative land planning and development initiatives. TFM has played an integral role in many of the region’s most recognized projects including the Granite Ridge Power Plant, the Verizon Wireless Arena,  the Manchester Municipal Complex, the redevelopments of the Bedford Mall and Wayfarer Hotel in Bedford, and the future redevelopment of the former Macy’s site in Bedford. Other large notable projects include the 243,500 square-foot-Exel Liquor Distribution Center in Bow and the 614,240 square-foot, LEED certified high-bay UPS Northeast Logistics Center in Londonderry-one of the largest single-story industrial buildings ever built in NH.

During the past two years TFMoran, through steady growth and the acquisition of firms in Portsmouth and Auburn, has grown its workforce by over 20 employees, making it one of the largest full service engineering firms in New Hampshire. UNH engineering student, Kody Folsom interning this summer at TFMoran

TFMoran’s Civil Engineering Department welcomes Kody Folsom as a summer intern. Kody is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. This fall Kody will be entering his Junior year, prepared with additional on-the-job engineering skills from TFMoran engineers. We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Kody, and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

2016 Building on Hope Project – Manchester Police Athletic League (MPAL)

On Monday, May 16th TFMoran attended the 2016 Building on Hope ground breaking event at the Manchester Police Athletic League‘s Michael Briggs Community Center. The Center is located on the corner of Beech Street and Laurel Street, and is undergoing a million dollar “extreme makeover”, thanks to hundreds of local companies donating services, time and materials.  TFMoran Structural Engineers donated their services for renovations  to the 1910 year old building. Renovations include two existing floors (total 16,500sf) to provide a community room with a full commercial kitchen, exercise room, boxing and judo areas, classrooms, office and meeting space, and new bathrooms and lockers. Guests gathered outside and heard from Building on Hope co-chair and project architect, Jonathan Halle of Warrenstreet Architects, Manchester Police Chief Nick Willard, Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas, along with representatives from the offices of New Hampshire Senators Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen. The ground breaking event kicked off “Build Week” and the big reveal party is scheduled for Sunday, May 22nd at noon. 

“Building on Hope is a community partnership project series centered in New Hampshire. With the motto of ‘many hands make light work,’ our group of thousands of volunteers, comprised of individuals and businesses, come together every two years to renovate a non-profit facility.” according to the organization’s website.

As stated on MPAL’s website: “The Manchester Police Athletic League (MPAL) is an after school athletic organization that connects cops and kids.  MPAL is a 503 (c) non-profit that is run by a Manchester Police Officer assigned full time to the organization. Athletics include Boxing, Judo, wrestling and aikido.  MPAL also offers numerous recreational and academic programs to include Police Exploring and tutoring services.  The goals of the organization are to provide youth with a safe, positive environment where police officers serve as coaches and mentors.  MPAL also relies on a group of dedicated volunteers to provide expert coaching and development opportunities for participants.  All athletics and activities are 100% free of charge, making programs accessible to all youth who want to participate.”

TFMoran Host Derryfield Senior Hannah Kelsey

TFMoran is pleased to be hosting Hannah Kelsey, a Senior at The Derryfield School in Manchester, NH, for her Independent Senior Project (ISP). Derryfield has a long history of allowing graduating seniors to pursue a short term internship in a field of their interest.  This experience allows seniors to gain real world experience that can help in the process of choosing a career after college.  As part of her ISP, Hannah will be introduced to a broad variety of projects and tasks incorporating some of TFMoran’s professional services which include civil engineering, structural engineering, stormwater management, construction support services, and land survey.  We have truly enjoyed mentoring Hannah and wish her the very best in the next phase of her education and whatever career she embarks on.

In Hannah’s own words:

“As part of my last six weeks as a senior at The Derryfield School in Manchester, I am taking part in an Independent Senior Project. This Independent Senior Project is designed for students to gain real-world experience and learning in a subject they are passionate or curious about. I’ve always loved problem solving and building things, so when I joined Derryfield’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) course this fall I became interested in engineering. Next year I will be attending Hamilton College in Clinton, NY where I am considering a five-year engineering program. So for my Independent Senior Project I decided my time would be well spent to explore the engineering world and the different disciplines within it. I learned about TFMoran through Derryfield and am very thankful for them for letting me do my Independent Senior Project here. I have learned a lot already and am very happy with my decision to spend these weeks having an out-of-classroom learning experience at TFMoran.”

TFMoran is one of nine companies receiving the prestigious Business of the Year award.  All businesses must be nominated by a chamber of commerce executive. A Panel of Excellence, consisting of executives from the 2015 Business of the Year award winning businesses, selected this year’s recipients after careful consideration and great debate.

Awards will be presented at a special luncheon on Thursday, May 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester. Safety First: ‘Tis the Season for Poison Ivy and Tick Bites

TFM’s Safety Committee asked our Survey Field Operations Manager, Stephen Bibeau to put together a few helpful hints to prevent contracting poison ivy and tick bites. Steve has been surveying since 1985, and has plenty of experience when it comes to what to do, to stay safe and avoid itching and biting.

See below for Steve’s Helpful Tips – Please pass along this information with others!

 

Poison Ivy:

  1. Wear gloves.
  2. Do not touch any part of your skin after tying your shoes or using equipment, use a cloth or something else.
  3. Use Tecnu® lotion prior to going into field.
  4. Carry a bottle of rubbing alcohol and follow these steps:
    Step 1: Cleanse area; Step 2: Wash with water; Step 3: Wash with soap. You have ten minutes. If you just wash with soap first, you take a chance of spreading it to other areas.
  5. When you get home, wear gloves to take off your shoes. Often the oil is still on your outerwear.

 

Ticks:

  1. Cover up skin as much as possible.
  2. Tuck pants inside socks or use something to seal possible entry areas; tuck shirt in.
  3. Use deet if you can. Try to stay away from high % deet formulas, above 15% has been known to cause seizures in some.
  4. Buddy system-don’t be shy, have your buddy check you. It is better to be safe than sorry.

TFMoran staff Volunteer for Adopt-A-Block

TFMoran staff took the afternoon to volunteer in Manchester as part of Intown Manchester’s Adopt-A-Block event which was held on Friday, April 22, 2016.  The Adopt-A-Block event is an organized neighborhood clean up effort that happens once a year around Earth Day.  TFMoran staff joined almost 60 other community minded volunteers in the Manchester Mill Yard for an afternoon of raking, mulching, trimming, and picking up litter to help keep Downtown Manchester clean and green.  In total over 20 local businesses worked in conjunction with the Manchester Parks and Recreation Department and the UNH Cooperative Expansion to make the Adopt-A-Block event a huge success and to make a very visible improvement in the community.  Intown Manchester’s photos of the event can be found on their facebook page.

TFM’s Senior Project Manager, Nick Golon represents NH ASCE on Capitol Hill

More than 200 American Society of Civil Engineers members from across the country – 49 states represented – gathered in Washington, DC, March 15th – 17th for the annual ASCE Legislative Fly-In to advocate on Capitol Hill for infrastructure improvements, only to learn that the Washington Metro was closing for 24 hours to make emergency inspections the exact day of the scheduled Congressional visits.  No matter.  It was just another very timely talking point for the members to make the case for infrastructure.  The focal points for the members to push on the Hill this year included the Federal Aviation Administration bill reauthorization, work on and passage of a Water Resources Development Act so that it is on a two-year cycle, and the importance of increased investment for water infrastructure.  The following ASCE-NH members attended the fly-in and met with NH Senator Kelly Ayotte: ASCE-NH Treasurer Nick Golon (TFMoran, pictured on the far right), ASCE-NH President-Elect Thalia Valkanos, ASCE-NH Legislative Committee Chair Darren Benoit, and former ASCE-NH Student Liason Andrew Wells.
